Sven Lütticken – Filming Capital and Filming ‘Capital’ (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
In my talk “Filming Capital and Filming Capital,” I will focus on a number of recent film and video essays by directors/artists such as Godard, Alexander Kluge, Allan Sekula and Noël Burch, Hito Steyerl and Zachary Formwalt. Not all of these works explicitly reference Eisenstein’s plan to make a film version of Marx’s Capital, as Kluge’s News from Ideological Antiquity does, but in one way or another they can all be seen as employing Eisensteinian dialectical montage to chart the flows of capital and reveal its abstractions in concrete images and juxtapositions. As far as time permits, I will discuss some of the different aesthetic strategies employed in the films, and focus on the dialogue with Marx in some of them.
